Gefico strengthens its leadership in desalination for the naval and offshore industry with new projects

The Galician company is one of the few worldwide capable of designing and manufacturing desalination systems using reverse osmosis, thermal evaporation, and mechanical vapor compression distillation—a key technology for offshore projects.

Gefico, founded in 1979 and headquartered in Cerceda, A Coruña, has established itself as an international benchmark in the development and manufacturing of seawater desalination solutions for the naval and offshore industry. It is one of the few companies in the world that masters and produces equipment based on the three main desalination technologies currently available on the market.

Among these, mechanical vapor compression (MVC) distillation stands out as particularly suitable for projects where no heat source is available, as is the case on most vessels, and where it is necessary to produce high-quality freshwater using only electrical energy. These systems are increasingly in demand for offshore platforms and industrial facilities, where operational reliability and reduced maintenance are critical factors.

The MVC equipment developed by Gefico requires fewer consumables and has lower maintenance needs, resulting in a significantly reduced operating cost (OPEX) over its service life. The development and refinement of this technology have been one of the company’s main strategic milestones in recent years.

The results of this technological commitment are already visible in international projects. Recently, Gefico manufactured a system capable of producing 30 cubic meters per day of distilled water for an oil platform in Nigeria. The company is also currently working on a new order of three units for offshore wind platforms in the North Sea, reinforcing its positioning in the offshore and marine renewable energy sector.

In addition to freshwater generators, Gefico offers a full range of water pre-treatment and post-treatment solutions, including filtration, chemical dosing, disinfection, and remineralization systems, adapted to the different water uses required on board vessels and in industrial facilities.
